I know nothing about Suicide Squad. The movie has been getting a lot of hype, mostly bad, but it has peaked my interest. I just finished reading the Rebirth one-shot for Suicide Squad and it left me empty, with no interest in ever reading another issue.
The Suicide Squad is a group of villains with an explosive chip conveniently placed in their neck, so the government can control them. Amanda Waller is in charge of Task Force X and the first few pages is a great dialogue between her and Obama about the blurred lines between right and wrong. She convinces the president that there is a need for villains to help protect the innocent. After twisting his arm the president agrees, but only if they have a heroic Captain America-esque leader. Waller read his mind because she has just the man for the job. She heads down to Guantanamo Bay to convince Rick Flag to lead the team. While she tries to convince Flag to lead the team it flashes to Deadshot, Harley, and Boomerang on a mission. It’s weird because how the book began the squad had not been formed yet, but it seems like at least three members were already getting shit done. I guess Waller wasn’t being completely honest with the president.
Overall this issue is just plain. Nothing stands out. None of the characters jump out and try to establish themselves. With a ton of Rebirth issues coming out this one is just a dust in the storm of DC trying to grab new readers. I guess with the movie coming out it will help them get a few extra sales for this book, but there sure isn’t anything to keep them coming back month to month.
