The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho is one of the most relatable books I have ever read. I have never herded sheep, been to Africa, or attempted to cross a desert, but this book is written for anyone that wishes to discover their Personal Legend in life.
The plot of this timeless fable is simple. A shepherd has a reoccurring dream about pyramids and treasure, so he visits a gypsy in order to have these images analyzed. From there he travels to Africa and meets an assortment of characters that drastically change his outlook on life. The boy is constantly delayed from his journey and even doubts the reasoning behind his dream, but by listening to omens he continues his trek to the pyramids.
This book always ends up on lists pertaining to “Books you should read before you die” because everyone has a similar predicament in life. Everyone has this dream they wish to accomplish before they conceivable pass on to the next world. It could be simple, like settling down and having a family or it may be complicated like climbing Mount Everest. However, the bottom line is always the same. You are chasing some sort of destiny where trials and tribulations will surely raise their ugly heads. They will make you question oneself and possibly change your life goal.
I have often pondered what my Personal Legend is in life. Sometimes I have no idea what I want to do or if living my life like the crystal merchant is the right path for me. I am glad Dusty recommended this book for our monthly read because it helped me obtain a different perspective on finding one’s true dream. This book hasn’t drastically changed my life, it’s not my personal Bible on how I view the world. It just made me realize that I should not be scared of these dreams that seem unattainable because like the Englishman, you have to work hard to reach your goals. No one is going to tell you the secrets to life, if you don’t try to figure it out yourself.
The Alchemist is a quick read and I feel it is a story that everyone should be familiar with, so check it out. This book has a ton of good quotes. I’m listing some of my favorites below, enjoy.
