We, like always in a timely fashion, chat about our “Pages Reads:” book of the month for October. Smith chose aptly themed book The Haunting of Hill House, by Shirley Jackson. Chalk this up to dating, or poor dialog, but we sort of had mixed feelings about this one.
A footnote for The Haunting of Hill House, if you decide to read this, is the beginning of the book drags on for a while before they even get to the house. You meet 5 characters and not a one of them has positive traits, aside from Eleanor, who I sort of felt stand-offish about. Just power through it and it gets…better?
We dive into each of the characters in the story; Eleanor, Theodora, Luke, Dr. Montague… his wife (something should’ve happened to her), to the once mentioned gatekeeper. The story is wrought with confusing scenery and odd dialog that just didn’t seem to paint the picture completely. For me anyways, I felt I had to do a lot of the imagination part.
We also choose the next “Pages Reads:” for November! Stephen King’s Salem’s Lot! One of us has already read this, but we can’t wait to discuss it.
Thanks for listening!
